ZC Sharon Cain sharoseh43@gmail.com 250-540-8270 If you live anywhere but British Columbia, you probably won’t get why so many people experience so-called spring fever. We mean that genuine feeling of excitement and happiness which overflow us from the inside when the first warm sunny days arrive. This feeling is showing in our clubs – new ideas, new members, new club activities. Congratulations to all who have completed their elections and sent your new board members lists to md19, DG Debbie Allan and myself (ZC). It is nice to see new names in many of the positions. Our Zone project Vision Screening has been completed for this fiscal year. SD22 (Vernon, Lumby and districts) were completed in October, 2022 with a total of 1154 Kindergarten, Grade 3 and Grade 6 children being screened and 116 children being referred to visit an optometrist. Lions from the Vernon Lions Club, Armstrong Lions Club, Enderby & District Lions Club and Lumby Lions Club have been volunteering to do Vision Screening for Kindergarten, Grade 3 and Grade 6 children in all of SD83 Elementary schools in Salmon Arm, Canoe, Tappen, Celista and Sorrento. Celista and Sorrento Lions assisted with the screening in their schools. A total of 1152 children were screened with 73 children being referred to visit an optometrist. The Welsh Allyn Vision Screener was purchased by and shared by the Enderby, Armstrong, Vernon, Lumby and Lake Country Lions clubs. If the machine detects any vision problems that a child may have, the school Principal sends a referral to the parents to follow up with an optometrist. On average in both school districts, 8.19% of children screened required a referral. With corrected vision, the children do better in school, have fewer behavioral problems in the classroom and feel better about themselves. Eye exams with an optometrist are free for children. Our Travelling Lion is still active. Four Enderby Lions travelled to Vernon Lions Club early in April and Lumby Lions were host to 8 Vernon Lions mid month. The coffers are growing to support Vision Screening supplies. Spring Conference on April 28-29, 2023 saw many of our zone members attending. Friday night Fun Nite picnic was a blast. Great learning experiences, wonderful speakers and so many new and old friends to enjoy the last conference of District D. Next year we will be District I and much larger in territory and membership. The highlight of the conference for me was being chosen District D Lion of the Year. I am so humbled and honored for this beautiful crystal award. I would not have been chosen for this prestigious award without the wonderful clubs is my zone.
