ZC Sharon Cain sharoseh43@gmail.com 250-540-8270 A NOTE FROM YOUR ZONE CHAIR - SHARON CAIN 101st ANNUAL CONVENTION – I had a great time in Penticton meeting up with old friends from Districts A to H. Lots of interesting seminars and officer meet-ups. A fantastic fun night with the Mardi Gras theme. Some learning sessions for zone chairs, presidents, secretaries, treasurers and membership chairs. There was something for everyone. Our guest this year was John Youney , International Director from Skowhegan, Maine, USA. He has worked as a trial attorney for the past 41 years. His experience and reputation have qualified him to serve as a court-rostered mediator, as well as a court-rostered guardian ad litem in child protection. He became a Lion in 1975 and in recognition of his service in many positions, he has received numerous awards, certificates of appreciation and is a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow. John Youney’s presented a seminar called “Back to the Future with Endless Vision”. His presentation made us all think about change and how to accept change and move forward. All things in life are always changing, sometimes for the better and sometimes not – that is the value of change – it can always change again. With his “question and answer” type of presentation, he, in my estimation, gave us all encouragement to accept our redistricting change. Congratulation to the D1 Lions who chose to attend the Convention Lions Allan Louis, Mike Takahashi, Judy Louis, Bill Friend, Trudy Parke, Ken Cain and ZC Sharon Cain Congratulations to Bill Friend for attending his 60th Convention and for being a mentor for PID Allan Hunt when he first became a Lion. Other fun stuff at the Convention: ID John Youney & PID Allan Hunt presented Secretary Excellence to July Louis and ZC Excellence to Sharon Cain. Our DG Debbie Allan and PDG Debbie Bostock with ZC Sharon Cain at Mardi Gras night – having fun as usual. The Memorial Service honored three Lions from D1. Victor Aube, Enderby Lions Club, Gary Raasch and Karen Whittle, Vernon Lions Club. It was a beautiful ceremony presented by PDG Wayne Atkinson. Two music selections brought tears to our eyes – “The Older I Get” – Alan Jackson and “I Hope You Dance” – Lee Ann Womack. We remembered 181 Lions who have passed away in our Multiple District 19. I have been traveling around to visit the clubs in my zone – great food, great friends and great fun. It is my privilege to share district information, club progress and learn what my clubs are doing. Thank you so much to all for great meals and gifts. Now I am attending your clubs with our District Governor Debbie Allan. She is sharing a message from BRIAN E. SHEEHAN - Lions Club International President 2022- 2023 as well as lots of information for our clubs to succeed. The fall Camp Winfield Improvement Meeting was held Sunday, Oct 23 with a good attendance. It was nice to see Clubs representing Enderby, Lumby, Vernon and Lake Country in attendance. The last few years have been challenging for the camp funds for improvements and the wish list. Help if you can. Twenty-seven Lions attended 11 October 2022 to disinter the capsule which was no easy task because the roots of the tree, as it grew, held a firm grip. When free, Lion Peter Gilowski 91, gave great effort to break the concrete without success. Lion Herb Bays was successful and we were treated to the photos and pins therein. (Interesting to note that our Members had hair back then) Lion John Pavelich read a list of the club members then, many of whom are still members today. One photo herein shows Members present when the capsule was put in the ground: left to right; Mike Holoiday, Peter Gilowski, Tom Baird, John Pavelich, Herb Bayes. Elmer Halvorson, Joe Deveau and Willem Roell. Most of these men were President of the club and many have held multiple offices in the club. A new capsule will be returned to the site soon. DG Debbie Allan and ZC Sharon Cain visited Enderby Lions on Oct. 27. Lion Willem Roell was honored with a Life Membership, well deserved. The Lions present posed for a photo as well. Life Member Willem Roell Enderby Lions members ARMSTRONG LIONS CLUB The Armstrong Club is currently active with their online Bingo. Their next Service project is Vision Screening in the schools to begin on Nov. 28. ZC Sharon Cain and DG Debbie Allan visited the Armstrong club on Oct 26. DG Debbie was privileged to induct two new members: Helen Jackson and Lois Skrecky. Welcome to Lions International ladies. LAKE COUNTRY/WINFIELD LIONS CLUB Our October Report carries forward some projects we will complete by the end of the Month. First, Saturday October 1 was a very successful environmental project. We completed our annual re-cycling Shred-it project: 12 Lake Country Lions participated, contributing an average of 4 hours each. We received donations from the community of $1,200. Second, on Wednesday, October 16 Lake Country Lions hosted our zone chair Sharon Cain and our District Governor, Debbie Allan for a dinner with the club and an important information session. We are looking forward to the Spring Conference which will be held in Vernon in April 2023. Also, re-organization of Zone structures was discussed. On Saturday, October 29 Lake Country Lions will participate in a community service project, the cleaning of the Winfield Cemetery in anticipation of Remembrance Day. We will be co-operating with the Lake Country Rotary Club in this venture. Finally, Lake Country Lions are preparing for our signature Community Family project. In co-operation with Lake Country Fire Fighters the Halloween Bonfire and Fireworks is being brought back after a three-year hiatus. We anticipate serving a thousand hot dogs and hot chocolate. LUMBY LIONS CLUB The Lumby Lions hosted the Santa Anonymous Toy Run on Sept. 11, 2022. Pictured are Lions Linda Vlasveld and Mike Takahashi presenting Santa’s Anonymous President Perry Wainwright with a cheque. Over $6,000.00 in cash was collected and many toys. This important charity provides children with birthday and Christmas gifts. The Lumby Lions are so busy! Our Halloween Dance is Saturday, October 29th featuring the Shawn Lightfoot Band. The No Stone Left Alone ceremony to honor Lumby's veterans will be held November 7th, 2022 at the Lumby cemetery. Grade 3 children from J.W. Inglis school will lay poppies on each grave. The Salvation Army Kettle campaign kicks off on December 16th, 2022. Vision Screening at our local schools begins November 8th, 2022. Our regular meetings are the first Tuesday of the month - come join us! On October 23rd 2022 at the Camp Winfield Improvement meeting, Mike Takahashi and Linda Vlasveld discovered a new addition for campers at Camp Winfield. Big White donated a gondola that will be retrofitted into a "space travel machine" with all the bells and whistles VERNON LIONS CLUB The Vernon Lions have been busy cleaning and doing the preventative maintenance on the food truck to secure it for the winter months. Thanks to Lion Mike Smith, Lion Ralph, Lions Jackie and Judy and Lion Mike Herrling. The 101st MD19 Annual Convention in Penticton was attended by Lions Sharon, Ken, Bill, Trudy, Allan, Judy. Lion Sharon was honored to receive the Zone Chair Excellence award and Lion Judy was honored to receive the Secretary Excellence award. The Vision Screening for the schools has commenced in Vernon and is going very well and is very successful. Vision Screening in progress Donations to Camp Winfield Yummy soup/sandwiches Note: you cannot post pictures of children without parental permission (this is a grandchild of a member). If taking a picture for media purposes, only the back of the child’s head is permitted. We also wear masks when doing the actual screening – to protect the children as well as ourselves. Covid and flu season is upon us. DG Debbie Allan visited the Vernon Club on October 20, our Zone Chair visited on October 3, sharing their knowledge and guiding the club on where to learn this knowledge on different websites.
