Season’s Greetings May the holiday season bring health and happiness It is hard to believe we are closing in on the halfway mark of our Lion’s year. As I look at the reports I see membership growth, MMR reporting, service reporting and great things happening in all our communities thanks to the hard work of Lions Clubs throughout our wonderful District D! I want to thank all of you for your hard work and dedication to bettering your communities. This is a very busy time of year and I hope that everyone remembers to take a little time for themselves and their families as we all need to recharge so that we can continue the work we do. To all the clubs that VDG Michael and I have visited, thank you for the wonderful meetings. We have learned so much about what each club is doing. To those clubs we haven’t visited yet, we will be visiting your clubs starting in March. I will be away from January 4 to 19 to regroup and get ready for the next half of my year! Again, thank you for all you do for your community! I was reviewing some magazines that I have been storing for some time, and found this article that I thought would be good to pass on. It goes with my theme Recycle, Reuse, Renew. Reduce, Reuse An environmentally friendly shop tip Woodworking can create a lot of garbage: scraps of wood, odd nuts and bolts, empty containers and more. Here is a tip that enables you to recycle all of the above mentioned trash by turning it into a handy stand-up dust pan. The key component to this mini-project is a rectangular-shaped can – such as a lacquer or turpentine container. With the can laying flat on your workbench, and the fold –over joint on the bottom, cut away one end and most of the top. Leave ¼” lip around the cut edges to fold back for strength. Use pliers to bend them back and then hammer the seams smooth. File or grind the corners to remove sharp edges. Finally, drill two holes in the back edge and use a couple of spare nuts and bolts to attach a scrap length of 1 x 2 to serve as a handle. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even round over the handle corners a bit. A scrap length of wood, a couple nuts and bolts and a large –sized empty rectangular container - turpentine or lacquer cans jump to mind – are all you need to build this recycled stand-up dust pan. This tip lets you put potential scrap to work picking up actual garbage in your shop. Have a great holiday and be mindful of our environment. Till next year your environment chair Angus Benedict IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION WARNING: Magnetic name tags and pacemakers should not be worn together. I experienced this lesson per￾sonally. Any magnetic source, natural or manmade device, will disable a Pacemaker, as they are sensitive to any mag￾netic field strength. The pacemaker micro relays will not function as required, resulting in the failure of the pace￾maker. My high-tech pacemaker (less than 5% presently) has audible alarms built-in that warned me of the pending danger. Lion’s members with pacemakers, please consider switching to a pin style name tag. Avoid placement of cell phones in shirt pockets also. Any Pacemaker in a magnetic field will not function properly, and you risk the loss of your life.
