HUNGER REPORT Virtual Cabinet Meeting, February 11, 2023 To My Fellow Lions in District D, soon to become I, Hopefully, some of your clubs were able to take advantage of the Food Collection Initiative, the project planner to support a local food organization, on the LCI website. If not, I encourage you to do so; food banks this time of year are dwindling in supplies, following the big holiday donations. My home club, Leavenworth Lions, are planning a food drive for Friday, March 3rd. We have determined the following tasks: Selecting an organization to receive your food: We will be taking donations to our local food bank. Determining the style of food collection: Our club is doing a host in-person collection site. We have spoken with a local grocer, who will let us set up outside the store. His employees will have bags of groceries for set donations, plus we’ll be able to take individual items and money. It was his suggestion that we have it on a Friday, late morning through afternoon. Promoting our food collection project: We will be using sites on the net, Facebook, our local newspaper, and will put out fliers to promote this. Hunger Grants (this info is also on the LCI website) LCIF offer hunger grants to Lions Districts in the amounts of $10,000 US-$100,000 US. The goal of the LCIF Hunger Grant Program is to help Lions support school based feeding programs, food banks, feeding centers, and similar facilities that provide food to people when they need it most. In this Lion’s year, here are some grants that were awarded: Equipped a soup kitchen with an industrial freezer (2) Renovated a kitchen serving the homeless Served meals to Veterans So much can be done to feed the hungry, from our small town projects to larger projects!! Let no one go hungry…We Serve! Lion Dorothy Nilles, Hunger Chair for District D
