Many Hands Make Light Work DG Thoughts: Well here we are in the middle of March and very busy. Brian and I are in the middle of our trips to the US clubs now that the weather and roads are better. We are always amazed at how welcome we feel when we visit clubs. It feels like we have known each and every person that we meet. The meals we have had are wonderful, the Lions we meet are welcoming, and we have had a chance to visit areas that we have never travelled to before. Thank you Lions for making our year such a warm and welcoming one! As we travel to areas that do not have a Zone Chair, we have had PDG’s attend with us. I want to thank these dedicated people, who have travelled with us to clubs outside their zones and have assisted us along the way. District D has amazing PDG’s who are so willing to help the District in whatever way they can! The last District D conference will be on us fast! The planning committee has been working hard to create a wonderful experience for all that attend, whether for the training, the friendship, or the fun there will be something for everyone. Get your registrations in soon! As we approach July 1st, 2023, the redistricting is coming along. Thank you to everyone who has worked on this, including our new Lions family members from 19E. We have had input from both districts and we are well on our way to a smooth merger. Our membership numbers are in the plus!! Our service reporting and our MMR’s are being done by those hard working secretaries in our clubs. A huge thank you goes out to PDG Joyce for all the work on reporting, service and membership that she has done. Hope to see as many of you as possible at the Conference in Vernon on April 28th and 29th!! Secretaries: As we will be having a new portal to MyLion as of July 1, 2023, I have been requested to ask you to check through your members listed on MyLCI to ensure that name, address, phone number and birth date are correct in order to help make this a smooth transition. If you have a couple listed, they must have individual email accounts as they are unable to have two people using the same email address. May the early spring Awaken your soul and Remind you to Celebrate the season with the Hope and joy it brings CONFERENCE There will be a conference bulletin coming out in the next week with lots of details on program, contest and awards, service project, and other things to do with this great event. Remember this is the last conference for District D. We would love a great turnout and to celebrate our District Governor Debbie’s year. Let us show the other Districts how to enjoy the fun and fellowship that comes from attending the conference. 1 DISTRICT D NEWSLETTER District Governor Debbie Allan Editor Debbie Bostock dandballan@telus.net debbie.bostock@gmail.com March 2023 Issue 9 MEMBERSHIP PDG Mark Mansell, of Ocean Park Lions Club serves at the Global Membership Approach person for our MD, and shared the following along with the ‘Growth Checklist’ I put in February newsletter. To grow your club: MEETINGS ARE EFFICIENT, INFORMATIVE, AND FUN 1. All meetings last 59 minutes or less. 2. Meetings are informative (e.g., guest speakers, Lions training etc.) 3. ALL MEETINGS ARE FUN! The club is open to new ideas for having fun. Long standing traditions may not be fun to new members. 4. Annual member surveys are used to determine if meetings are efficient, informative, and fun. 5. Every member knows who the club’s leadership chairperson is. I will post the remainder of PDG Mark Mansell’s lists later this spring. Several of our clubs have recruited new members the past couple of months. Forest Grove and Armstrong both published notices to their community that they might have to close their Lions Club if new members can’t be found. They listed all the services that the Lions club provides for their community, and both efforts resulted in several new members being inducted into those clubs. Logan Lake has also had much success in bringing in many new members during this Lions year. REMEMBER; KEEP ALL MEMBERS ENGAGED IN YOUR SERVICE WORK, AS THEY WILL REMAIN ACTIVE WITH YOUR CLUB. If you need any new member packets, let me know. The Lions have been supporting Lions Quest programs for schools and communities t help make a difference for over 30 years. Lions Quest school-based programs are proven to address key concerns and issues educators & other youth leaders face every day and strive to promote positive behaviors while also reducing negative behaviors (i.e. bullying, substance abuse, suicide). Research is clear that social emotional learning cannot reside within schools alone, and we are offering an opportunity for the community to be involved in our efforts too. Please join us at the Army Navy & Airforce Veterans Club on Sunday April 30 from 1-3 pm. This will be an interactive forum for people to learn and connect about the importance of engaging with children & youth in our community to support mental well-being. You can find more details and registration information on the attached flyer. Please visit our website at www.lionsquest.ca for additional information about our work. It takes a village to raise a child, and you are a key part of the village. ENVIRONMENT Hello District D Well here we are in March. Time to think spring, plants, how soon, how many, what plants, how much space? These are all good questions to plan for. Good Luck. I am still hoping for a co chair, partner, replacement, any interest at all. I have had no response regarding this but I have only asked once so we will see. Warm weather will be really nice, to get outdoors to clean up the yard or go for a walk, visit with neighbours or sit in the sunshine, all good. Keep reporting your environment activities; we need to share this info to maybe encourage others to participate. My feature this month is a napkin holder for outdoor use, some ½”plywood, used plexiglass, used broom handle, a few screws and it is complete, a wind proof napkin holder. Send me your creations so I can feature them. Recycle, Renew, Reuse, Report environmenttangus@gmail.com 2 Remember April 22nd is Earth Day, has your club planned an environment event? Check out this flyer for ideas. 3 LEAVENWORTH LIONS HOLD FANTASTIC FOOD DRIVE!!! Helping to combat hunger in their community, the Leavenworth Lions Club held a successful food drive on Friday, March 3rd, at Dan’s Food Market. The drive collected 429 pounds of food! How did they do that? It turned out to be a simple process following these steps: -The club first approached the owner of Dan’s Food Market, Eric, who is a Lion. Eric was immediately on board with the idea and suggested the following: -Have it on the first part of the month (people are more flush with cash!) -Have it on a Friday, when people are prepping for the weekend. -Don’t start too early in the morning, go through most of the afternoon. -Knowing that the store was a go, the club talked with the local food bank, who could receive the donations just before closing at 5 PM, Friday afternoon. -The club recruited their team of Lions, 3 teams of 2 Lions, one team for each 2-hour shift (running from 11 AM-5 PM). -The club promoted the food drive,2-3 weeks out, in several ways: -The club webmaster used social media; the food bank was asked to advertise it this way too, with their various contacts. -Announcements in the local newspaper, ran twice in their weekly addition -Posters were designed and printed and put up in the store, one week prior This was the first time “out of the gate” for a food drive by the Leavenworth Lions Club. It was an easy project to pull off and the benefits were many: -Lots of food was collected; the community was generous! -It made the club feel good, especially those who worked the project! -It provided the club with some great PR! -It was so easy, so fun, so gratifying, that the club is thinking…. hmm! Maybe next year? Let no one go hungry….We Serve! 4 NORTHWEST LIONS LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE Good morning. IN case you didn’t know it I am this year’s superintendent of the Northwest Lions Leadership Institute. The registration deadline is fast approaching (1 April) and I’m asking for your help in getting the word out. The purpose of the Institute is to inspire and prepare tomorrow’s Lions to step into leadership positions for the next few years. To the point, this three-day course can help in determining your district’s near-future leaders. The beautiful location and low cost are additional incentives for attending. I’m requesting zone chairs and club presidents discuss possible candidates for this event. Attached is a flyer, registration, and recommendation documents. Additional information is at NWLLI.org. And if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. Thanks in advance for your help.
