Let’s Embrace Change As We Serve District I Bulletin December 2023 District Governor Michael Livingstone lionmichaellivingstone@gmail.com Bulletin Editor Debbie Bostock debbie.bostock@gmail.com DG MIKE’S MESSAGE As the first 6 months of the Lions year winds down, Christmas is just over and 2023 will be in the past. 2024 starts. We have not had a lot of snow this year which is different, however we will continue to hope for some at least in the hills. We have set up a new email account to be used when an e-transfer to the alert fund is made. That email is alertacc.md19i@gmail.com Again, use for e-transfers or to contact the administrators. Currently there is just over $64,000.00 for the application for the matching grant from Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) towards equipment needs for the Scotch Creek Fire Hall. Cheques are also welcome and can be mailed to DG Michael Livingstone at PO Box 437, Okanagan Falls, V0H 1R0. Planning for the District I Convention is going well; Lion Bob Elliot will have the Registration form out in January. Now is the time to start planning your attendance to the First ever District I Convention being held on April 26 & 27, 2024. Planning is under way and more to come in January. Plan to attend the Convention events: Friday Fun Night, Saturday Luncheon, Saturday Banquet as well as training opportunities. The Hotel and Conference Center is across the road from Orchard Park Mall. and Costco is 3 blocks away. I have just received a email that the expected update for MyLCI and MyLion has been moved from the planned January 20024 start to a later date to be announced in the future. The November December Md19 Newsletter is out, go to the MD19 website to read it. https://lionsmd19.org/newsletters.php And I just received a call from a club president that a spam email is going around requesting you to buy some gift cards for the DG. I assure you it is a spam as I would not send such a request. The email address is wrong and is not my email. Just move it to spam and if you can, report it as spam on your computer so it will be automatically not come to your in box. To all my fellow Lions Val and I wish you the very best of the season and may 2024 be the best ever as we continue our journey in Lionism, Sincerely YIL Michael Livingstone DG MD19-I APOLOGIES My sincere apologies for the very lateness of this bulletin, I unfortunately came down with a nasty cold beginning of December then caught a very nasty virile virus and have been really down and out. Debbie Bostock, Bulletin Editor OUR ENVIRONMENT Today all one hears about is our environment. Some of it is dire news but there is some good news. What can we do to make more good news? Our environment chair before me, Angus Benedict, encouraged re￾purposing items into something more useful. This was good and I’d like to expand on those ideas. Many of our clubs are into recycling things like bottles, drink cans, pull tabs, and cardboard. But, what do we as indi￾viduals do? Dorothy and I recycle metal, paper, glass ware, cardboard, and plastic. We even take good used clothing to our local thrift center. We all need to think about keeping things out of our landfills. Recycling helps to do this. Planting trees, cleaning roadsides, and removing certain types of weeds from the fields and parks are great things for us to be a part of. To better make us aware of all that you do, please send me a list of things done in your com - munities to make it a better place to live. Debbie Bostock Bulletin Editor From the desk of: District I Diabetes Awareness Chair Dr. Lee MacKay Email: lmackeh@hotmail.com Cell:250-509-0976 (evening call/text only please) As a new Lion, personally Type 1 Diabetic and local rural Diabetes Specialist, I was deeply moved to see the Global Diabetes epidemic is one of Lions Clubs International five core causes. It is truly an honour to step into the role of District I Diabetes Awareness Chair. This month as we observe World Diabetes Day on November 14th it is important, that Lions recognize this as a call to further action to address this year’s theme Access to Diabetes Care. We must encourage those in the communities we serve to get screened for type 2 diabetes, so meaningful education and interventions can be started early. We must also assist those living with type 1diabetes especially youth to live full lives with the condition and minimize the impact of diabetes distress by supporting attendance at diabetes camps through Strides events in Washington and in BC Camp Kakhamela at YMCA Camp Elphinstone on the Sunshine Coast. I look forward to supporting Lions Clubs in District I by raising awareness and promoting actions to address the myriad of impacts of diabetes locally and globally. Please reach out if I can support your club in your efforts to support Diabetes Awareness! Best regards, Dr. Lee Mackay 2024 MD19 CONVENTION We are changing things again; no longer will the MD19 convention be in the fall. We are moving it to the spring. This will be the first.
