District Governor Geraldine Ray’s theme for the year is “Vision leads to Success”. What a wonderful statement that makes for Lions and our future, and words to live by personally!

Putting a different slant on the word ‘Vision’… what a perfect statement for the Leader Dogs for the Blind campaign for the Lions District this year. We know how important our sight/vision is to all of our daily activities; imagine our daily routine without vision. Without vision some people feel trapped in a world of darkness and despair.

The mission statement for Leader Dogs for the Blind is: Empowering people who are blind or visually impaired with lifelong skills for safe and independent daily travel.

Leader Dogs for the Blind is 100% philanthropically funded. It relies on clubs like ours to help provide the support that makes it possible to give blind or visually impaired people training on orientation and mobility, and guide dog training absolutely free!

My goal as District Chairman for Leader Dogs for the Blind, as usual is 100% Club participation. There are some fun and interesting things that a club can do to raise funds as well as raising awareness in a community about Leader Dogs for the Blind. Some clubs have done a Dining in the Dark; eating with blind folds. There is also a coin collection canister marked ‘Pennies for Puppies’, that can be placed in stores or at ballgame concession areas. Some clubs could sponsor a 50/50 bingo at ballgames for Leader Dog. Or clubs can ask each member to donate $.25 at each meeting and send the proceeds to Leader Dog at the end of the year…or even just $.25 each at just one meeting would work. There is also a program called LIGHT UP LEADER DOG, during the Holiday season. For a donation of $10.00 a luminary will be placed in honor of the supporter on Dec. 11, 2021 on the Leader Dog Campus and there will be a drive through of the campus on that night. This contribution needs to be made by Nov.10. If this is something that you are interested in, please send the contribution to me and I will forward it on so that your club will be credited for a District contribution. How about a 5K run. The possibilities are endless. Have fun with it! Please send your donations to me: Donna Wetz, Leader Dogs for the Blind Chairman, PO Box 204, Newell, SD 57760. I will forward them on to Leader Dog so that your club and District 5SW gets credit for the contribution.

There are also possibilities for individuals to contribute to this worthwhile organization. They have a great gift shop on line. Just google Leader Dogs for the Blind, and go to the Gift shop tab. And there are personal contributions. These like the club donations can be sent to me or to Leader Dogs for the Blind at 1039 S. Rochester Rd. Rochester Hills, MI 48309.

Thank you for your generous support of Leader Dogs for the Blind. Be creative and have fun spreading the word about Leader Dog. Let’s “Make Everyone Unstoppable!”
