When Avon native Heidi Zacchera retired early to take care of her mother, she was finding she was driving all around the state to find medical durable equipment. Her mother Alice, a retired Avon teacher, passed away in 2016 whereupon Heidi had a conversation with a resident about medical durable equipment. Heidi said, “Driving around to find equipment”, the other person said, “well Avon would never offer that”. A light bulb went off and Heidi was on her way researching the idea of starting a medical durable equipment location in Avon in her mother's memory.
The town stepped up and gave a storage location that could be used for the equipment , but Heidi would have to get the needed equipment and meet the person in need at another location. The only other thing to consider was the potential liability issue. That was easily solved when Heidi brought the idea to the Avon Lions board of which she was president. They gave her the green light, and with Lions International support the Lending Locker was established.
The equipment is distributed at the Carmon Funeral Home parking lot, and equipment is also delivered to homes.
