Lions Pride DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE Thank you for the honor of serving as your District Governor for the upcoming year. I am truly humbled to be fulfilling this role. As I have traveled with my predecessors during the past few years I have become acquainted with many of you. What I have learned is there are some dedicated, hardworking Lions in this district. The reports I have heard and the projects I have seen are simply amazing. You are all to be commended for your efforts. We are entering our second century of worldwide service. To- gether we have “Climbed Mountains”, “Strengthened the Pride” and numerous other fulfilling service themes. Now, we must charter new courses and explore new frontiers of service. We are moving forward this year with “The Power of We”. Our goal this year is to serve 170,000,000 persons worldwide. This means here in our district we will need to increase our service efforts in our respective communities. I encourage us all, to look beyond what we have been doing and seize the opportunity to explore new ways to provide service. We will be working to merge districts. I would encourage you to reach out to our brothers and sisters and create a harmonious bond to ease the uncertainty. We are all Lions. This being said, my theme for the year is going to be, “Moving forward as One”. Let us all strive to keep these words in mind as we explore these new frontiers together. There can only be safety in numbers. Our work lies ahead. Let’s embrace the challenges together. Let us be encouraging to our peers and always mindful that, “where there’s a need, there’s a LION.
Yours in Lionism, Steve Taylor, District Governor District 24-E 2017-2018

BLACKSBURG HOST LIONS CLUB NEWS
Lion Elaine Cook had a vision. She wanted to serve people in the New River Valley who are
homeless. Typically these people are not eligible due to the fact that they do not have an address.
Lion Elaine and several Lions from Montgomery, Giles, Pulaski Counties and the City of Radford will form the New River Valley Sight Assistance Program. While we are
early in the organizational process, we are making strides to meet this need. Seed money from the MD 24 E Cabinet and work-
ing with the Charity Cor- poration to provide a pass through for donations.

Roanoke Valley Breakfast Lions Club News
Roanoke Valley Breakfast Lions Club celebrated its 40th year of serving the Roanoke Community at its Charter Night on June 23, 2017. Members beamed with pride as they reflected on their collective accomplishments this year. Prior to passing the gavel to incoming President Andre Peery, President Lion James “Jim” Dalton made several recognitions:
Lion Gary Swain was recognized as the 2016-17 Lion of the Year for his outstanding service. Lion Gary, the club’s Lion Tamer, is one of the first to arrive at meetings and one of the last to leave. He seldom misses a meeting and volunteers in most club projects.
PDG Lion Cliff DeMars was recognized for being an excellent role model. PDG Cliff remains a pacesetter in Lionism. He
leads with his finances, service and wisdom. In his customary manner, he made sure that everyone was aware that he and his partner for 50 plus years, Lion Mary Ann DeMars, work as a team.
Lion Gerald “Jerry” Hardesty was recognized for his many years coordinating the club's eyeglass recycling service project and his long tenure as treasurer. Although Lion Jerry resigned from the treasurer position four years ago, he remains active in club activities. He still sends birthday cards out to all members.
Lion JJ Johnson was recognized for his continuous and superb service to RVBLC as secretary for 30 plus years. Lion Jim praised Lion JJ for his efficiency and thoroughness in reporting club activities and keeping members informed.
Best wishes were expressed to Lions Glenn and Becky Asher as they said farewell to RVBLC. Lion Glenn served RVBLC as treasurer for several years and always livened up all social functions and meetings. His parting comment prior to leaving the club for South Carolina was “ I have done my job here, now I’m off to find a new club to enhance.” Lion Becky was a frequent volunteer for white cane. While both will be missed from RVBLC, they will continue their service as Lions.

Lions Quest Expansion
The History of Lions Quest
Lions Quest dates back to 1975, when a teenager named Rick Little set out on a “quest” to help other young people develop the skills and strength of character needed to succeed as adults. Rick conducted a survey of over 2,000 high school students to determine the issues that concerned them most and consulted experienced teachers who suggested including a teacher workshop which would serve as a classroom model. The program was so successful at the high school level that soon middle and elementary schools were asking for age appropriate positive youth development programs. Little eventually founded and served as chief executive officer of the Interna-

Benefits of this workshop include, bringing the Lions Quest program to local school children providing the strength to resist drugs, while helping to develop positive skills when interacting with their peers. Bring parents in to the education of their children, by better connecting their children to their homes, schools and communities, while building social and emotional skills and developing the child’s character.
Plans for anticipated expenses and future expansion plans are “a work in progress” at this time. We plan to introduce the program to others areas of District 24 E and adjoining Districts in the coming months, while aggressively pursu-
ing other schools systems and Lions clubs to participate in the program. We also plan to work with several schools sys- tems in the Roanoke area and surrounding counties to bring Lions Quest to their middle schools and to any new teach- ers in their systems.

NEWSLETTER UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT
Greetings to all Lions of MD 24 E.
As we move forward this year, it will be my intention to temporarily fill a position, that is so critical to our district. Your newsletter will be my humble attempt to keep all Lions informed about district events, club activities, and articles of opportunity and interest to motivate us and inspire us to serve our communities and help to make them better places. I would like to start including your club
events for the upcoming months, so that Lions from across our district can come out and enjoy your fund raiser / service project. This year, our international president’s theme is “The Power of We” and using this theme we must look around at our struggling clubs and help them to per- form service in their areas. If we are to grow, we have to increase our presence in the communi- ty and throughout our district. Please forward this news letter to all your club members. Print it out and mail it or hand it out at a club meetings to help spread the word about how great it is to be a Lion. I will be emailing the newsletter out as a pdf file format to allow everyone to be able to read it.
I will fall on my sword early and let you know that I am not an English major and I will provide you the best effort that I can. I will submit information given, but I ask that clubs be brief and to the point on reporting your activities and articles of interest. I only have so much room, so I
may use editor’s privilege and use portions of your article if I start running out of space.
If you have complaints or suggestions about the newsletter, please feel free to send me an email at marty.alford1960@gmail.com. The complainers names will be placed in a barrel and at the
